Picas and Jornet Ultra Champions

2012 Ultra Series champs Kilian Jornet & Nuria Picas ©Ian CorlessAs anticipated, the indomitable king of skyrunning, Kilian Jornet, adds the Ultra champion title to his recent fourth Skyrunner® World Series champion title to close a season which has enthralled and inspired all of us.

The women’s title went deservedly to Nuria Picas who won the 72k Course des Templiers today in Millau, France after delivering some equally inspiring performances in an ever-deepening women’s field.

The men’s race winner was Frenchman Fabien Antolinos in 6h10’35” who improved his fourth position here last year by an incredible 31’. Miguel Heras who led for much of the first part of the race was second in 6h14’54”, Andy Symonds, last year’s winner, third in 6h23’51” with all the first six finishers closing under last year’s winning time.

Ultra Champion and winner Nura Picas. ©ISFThe deep ladies field prospected a battle between Picas and Anna Frost, neck-and-neck in the ranking, but Frost’s recent form was not her best and she was forced to drop after the first check point.   The race was between Picas, Emelie Forsberg, Lizzy Hawker and last year’s winner Maud Gobert who reached the finish in that order.  Picas set off strong and dominated the race throughout finishing in 7h15’68” with Forsberg and Hawker closing in a tight sprint, respectively 7h26’15” and 7h26’24” and Gobert in 7h30’00”.

So the first Skyrunner® Ultra Series draws to a close after seeing some of the world’s top Ultra champions share the stage, sometimes in battle, always in friendship, they delivered both spectacle and emotion together with the thrill of the new young talent propelled to stardom.

Look out for the 2013 Skyrunner® World Series calendar to be announced soon where the best races, new and old, will open their doors to skyrunners everywhere.
