Spain and Italy head the European Skyrunning Championship with Kilian Jornet and Antonella Confortola doing the honours.  Kilian set a new course record and took the Vertical title in an incredible last minute sprint 150 metres below the summit of the steep Vertical Kilometer® in Canazei, Italy, Friday. Eighteen European nations scored points.

The men’s competition was fierce from Vertical Series champion and record holder Urban Zemmer and last-minute entry Saul Antonio Padua, who beat Kilian in the recent Mont-Blanc KM Vertical.  Padua shot ahead at the start, determined to carry out a repeat performance, followed by Zemmer, new-comer Philip Goetsch and Jornet. Zemmer moved into first position followed by Goetsch and Jornet to the col where Jornet changed gear and sprinted strongly to the finish, demolishing the record…and his adversaries.  The new Vertical Kilometer® world record for a race between 1,000m and 2,000m is 32’43''.  The three men were under the race record:  Zemmer, in 32’50” and Goetsch, in 32’54”.  2012 winner Neijc Kuhar, and Matheo Jaquemoud, Kilian’s Mont Blanc record partner were 4th and 5th respectively.

VK winner Antonella Confortola. © Ian CorlessThe women’s race favourite didn’t disappoint, and 2012 winner Antonella Confortola charged up the 1,000m face with strength and confidence to take the win and the gold for Italy.  Her winning time of 41’02” was nearly two minutes up on her 2008 standing record.  Emelie Forsberg who, like Kilian, winner of last week’s mammoth 65 km Ice-Trail, is set to take on all three distances in the Championships.  She clocked 45’01”, two minutes behind Confortola and took home the European silver medal for Sweden.  The Czech Republic, participating with an impressive 13-man team in the three competitions, took the bronze with Iva Milesova’s excellent third in her first-ever VK in a time of 43’09”.

The final European Skryunning ranking is based on the sum of the highest points scored in two out of three events.  The national title is based on the score of the first three men and one woman in all three events.

Follow Sunday’s second championship event with the Dolomites SkyRace® - a fast and technical 22 km course, it rises from Canazei to the 3,152m summit of the Piz Boè and back.  Snow will be among the technical features the all-star line up will look forward to - for some of the eighteen countries participating, a first.
