2014 Skyrunning World Champions Luis Alberto Hernando and Emelie Forsberg head the line-up for the weekend’s 2015 Skyrunning European Ultra Championships at Ice-Trail Tarentaise (ITT), Val d’Isère, France.  Vertical World Champion Laura Orguè, heads the Face de Bellevarde VK joined by Emelie Forsberg who will run both races. The men’s field is wide open with vertical specialists including Marco Moletto, Nejc Kuhar, and the winner of the recent Mont-Blanc KV, European Champion, François Gonon.

The Ice-Trail Tarentaise has made a name for itself with enough kilometres, climb and snow to challenge the world’s best. The 65 km course and 5,000m vertical ascent and descent,, the race reaches a top elevation of 3,653m and five peaks at 3,000m altitude. The records to beat, set in 2013, are 7h35’32” by Kilian Jornet and 9h11’11” by Emelie Forsberg.

Last year, the runners struggled with torrential rain, fog and slippery, soft snow forcing Luis Alberto, leading the race, to retire. The race was won by a brilliant Francois d’Haene. The forecast this year is excellent weatherwise, while the podium forecast sees Luis Alberto again as the strong favourite. Competition will come from 24-year-old Manuel Merillas, 5th here last year and 2nd at Zegama. France’s Fabien Antolinus placed 2nd here, so could represent a strong challenge. Italians Franco Collè, 2nd at the recent Mont-Blanc 80K and Fulvio Dapit, 4th here in 2014, will be looking for a podium place. Other contenders, include Poland’s Marcin Swierc, 3rd Mont Blanc 80K; Spaniards Pablo Villa, Jessed Hernandez; and Frenchmen, Sébastien Spehler, Benoit Cori, Cyril Cointre

Emelie Forsberg is back for more and, sportswoman that she is, will, as usual, tackle both races. The competition in the ITT will come from Spaniards Anna Comet, 2nd in the recent Mont Blanc 80K, Nuria Dominguez; from France, Maud Gobert, 3rd in 2014 and Anne Lise Rousset; Poland’s Magdalena Laczack, 3rd 2014 Mont-Blanc 80K; Italians Federica Boifava and Lara Mustat

The European Ultra Champions will each be awarded with the new, prestigious Alpina Watches Horological Smartwatch.

Friday’s Face de Bellevarde VK, the first of the Skyrunner® Vertical Series races, made  a come-back last year after a nine-year absence, celebrating with an all-star cast. It was here that the second-ever Vertical Kilometer® took place in 1996 up the famous Olympic downhill ski slope – 2.9km between 2,000-3,000m altitude! A young Marco De Gasperi set a world record here in 2003 in 34’51”. The course record still stands today.

Can François Gonon, winner and new record holder at the Mont-Blanc KV challenge De Gasperi’s long-standing record?
