Dolomites - Skyrunning celebrates two iconic races

The weekend’s events in the Italian Dolomites promise to be as hot as the recent weather across the Italian Alps.

The 18-year-old Dolomites Vertical Kilometer® and the Dolomites SkyRace® continue to attract the world’s top skyrunners which have become an icon on the skyrunning calendar.  More than 1,100 runners representing 35 countries will toe the start lines.

Tomorrow’s Vertical Kilometer® is headed by reigning world champion and 2014 record holder, Laura Orguè, fresh from her win at the recent Face de Bellevarde VK. The men’s field is led by Urban Zemmer, on the top rung of the 2014 ISF ranking.

The deep women’s field continues with Emelie Forsberg together with Salomon team mates Oihana Kortazar, Stephanie Jimenez, Kasie Enman and Paula Cabrerizio, the new Skyrunning European Vertical Champion; and top names Christel Dewalle (adidas) and Azara Garcia (Compressport) among others.

Urban Zemmer is accompanied on the La Sportiva team by top vertical specialists, Nejc Kuhar, Marco Moletto, Nadir Maguet and William Bon Mardion. Salomon will contribute Thorbjorn Ludvigsen and Remi Bonnet, and other top runners include Ferran Teixido (FEEC), Saul Padua Rodriguez, Eirik Haugsness (inov8) and many more…

With Sunday’s SkyRace®, despite the massive 3,404m ascent and descent, the short 22 km distance means that many of the top runners will attempt the double. The records to break are by Kilian Jornet in 2013: 2h00ì11” and Emelie Forsberg, 2h26’'00” (2012).

The world-class line-up up for the Dolomites SkyRace® includes:  2014 World Champion of the discipline, Elisa Desco (Scott /Compressport); the super-strong Salomon team: Emelie Forsberg, Laura Orgue, Oihana Kortazar, Kasie Enman, Mira Rai; Christel Dewalle (adidas) Anna Comet (FEEC/Dynafit), Megan Kimmel (Dynafit) and many more.

Top ranked runners in the men’s field include Salomon’s Tom Owens, Michel Lanne, Thorbjorn Ludvigsen, Dai Matsumoto among the favourites, together with:  Ionut Zinca (Valetudo); Manuel Merillas (Mammut/Compressport) 2nd at the recent ITT;  Zegama winner, Tadei Pivk and Matheo Jacquemoud, (Crazy Idea); Artiz Egea and Jokin Lizeaga (EMF);  a strong Catalan team (FEEC) including Pere Rullan, Jessed Hernandez; Alexis Sevennec (Scott/ Compressport).

A strong team representation comes also from the Czech Republic and Russian Skyrunning Associations following the Skyrunning Championships and Skyrunner® World Series.

The Dolomites SkyRace® will also represent an occasion to win a luxury Alpina Horological Smartwatch. As Official Watch of the 2015 Skyrunner® World Series and European Skyrunning Championships, Alpina Watches will award these two prestigious prizes based on the Alpina Smart Time Prize, an exclusive formula, devised by Alpina Watches and the ISF. It is based on timing at the highest point of the race, in this case the Piz Boè, 3,152m altitude. A bonus is given to younger and older competitors, putting everyone at the same level, irrespective of the final race results.
