SWS Ultra - Sage and Frosty winners at Speedgoat |
Saturday's Speedgoat 50K race winners and Skyrunner® Ultra Series ranking leaders Anna Frost and Sage Canaday maintain their position after the second race on the calendar after Transvulcania. Sage made a repeat performance after last year’s win where he set the course record in 5h08’07” closing this year in 5h12’30”. He commanded the race from start to finish, extending his lead throughout the race to finish more than 19’ ahead of second man Paul Hamilton. Alex Nichols was a close third, just two minutes behind Paul – the pair battling throughout to clinch the podium places. Rickey Gates ran in the top ten in the first part of the race, steadily gaining on the field to close 4th. Mike Wolfe appeared top ten only half way through and continued his gain to finish 5th. Anna Frost, riding on a wave of glory after her Transvulcania victory and second position in the Skyrunning World Championships 80k, had to battle for the win with Kasie Enman, 4th in the World Championships Mont-Blanc Marathon and 5th in Zegama, at one point, recovering a 6’ lead to close in 6h42’. Kasie closed less than two minutes behind –no bad for her first Ultra! Ellie Greenwood had a tough time with the altitude, but manager to gain 3rd position after 19 miles which she held to the end. In general, it was a gorgeous day to watch Speedgoat. However, the 27F temperatures at 2,500m under cloudless skies meant it was quite warm for the top competitors. Many extremely fast, but new to longer-trail-race talents went out hard and, later, wilted in the heat, thin air, and unrelenting vert. The SWS Ultra Series moves on to Italy for the legendary Kima Trophy on August 31st where 8,400m of vertical ascent and descent will challenge the runners over the 52km course.
